Bowring Institute
The Goal
Bowring Institute is one of the finest clubs in Bangalore (IND), that illustrates the spirit of the garden city with a perfect blend of large green spaces and local heritage. The project for Bowring Institute includes the construction of 2 main blocks and the renovation of their main building that is dating back to 1888. In order to bring to the 21st century the heritage edifice from interior and exterior areas, the collaboration between architect and lighting designer were fundamental, in order to guarantee a coherent language between the renewed spaces and lighting systems, in an interesting mix of cultural references and contemporary design. The team work experience was very satisfactory and this specific project represented a consolidation of collaborative relationship between Pragrup (Architects) and Ivorysense.
Challenges
One of the main challenges during the design process were to keep the building historical character, enhance the existent and new architectural features and textures through lighting, and at the same time propose solutions with a minimum impact on the existent structures. The solution adopted was to integrate functional and aesthetics lighting not as a separate matter, but as interrelated factors for the final experience of the spaces. The design focused on indirect and diffuse solutions for the ambient lighting reproducing that warm and cosy felling for the internal spaces and customized elements to be integrated within the architecture to create accents and define the volumes and elements that are characteristics of the culture and style of the place.
